Caffeine is a stimulant. When absorbed into the blood stream caffeine makes its way to the brain where it binds with certain receptors, known as adenosine receptors. These are what control our sleep. Adenosine is responsible for making us feel tired. Caffeine temporarily prevents the production of adenosine, which helps keep us alert and prevents feelings of tiredness, which makes them useful for people that occasionally have to stay up late to work or study.
In addition to making us feel more alert, by blocking the production of adenosine, caffeine also causes increased neuron activity in the brain, which encourages the body to produce more hormones, such as adrenalin. Once adrenalin reaches the bloodstream it increases our heart rate, dilates the blood vessels, increases oxygen in the blood, and speeds up our breathing, helping to keep us more active. This can make caffeine pills useful if you have to remain active for long periods. However, because of these effects, caffeine pills may not be suitable for people with cardio vascular problems, which is why such people should not consume large quantities of tea or coffee.
Because caffeine encourages the production of adrenalin, it can also cause certain undesirable effects for those that take caffeine in large doses (such as more than 600 mg a day), which include insomnia, anxiety, nervousness and irritability. However, taking in moderate doses, these effects are not common. Caffeine can be addictive, though, when used over a prolonged period. In fact, most regular coffee drinkers are probably addicted to caffeine without realising it, and may suffer from headaches, fatigue or irritability when they don't drink coffee, which means caffeine pills should be taken sensibly and for only short amounts of time. However, when taken carefully and only temporarily, caffeine pills can be useful for keeping you alert when working long hours, studying or when you need to remain awake.
