You might think your actual workout is the only thing that matters when it comes to gaining muscle, losing fat, and staying in shape, but what you do before your workout is actually just as important, maybe even more so. First and foremost, you must stretch properly before each and every workout. Stretching or warming up allows your body to prepare itself to face the rigors of exercise.
In addition to warming up, You might want to think about taking a specially formulated pre workout shake or supplement. Alternatley a small meal or snack at least an hour before embarking on your workout will increase energy levels. Good choices include bananas or other high protein fruits, small salads, yogurt, a bowl of oatmeal, a natural raw food bar, a couple of handfuls of mixed nuts, or a few lentils. Be sure to keep yourself hydrated during your work out.
